Parkway Health Fair 2012

The school year is coming to an abrupt end, so that means SENIOR PROJECT TIME! Just recently the seniors of parkway west conducted a health fair. Ten seniors where involved in this. First they went to classrooms and talked to student about what their senior project is on. They also bring a mentor with them who is from an organization dealing with their topic. Most seniors talked about sex. That includes stds, teen pregnancy, and abortion. While others talked about animal cruelty, and healthy eating habits.

Condoms, lubricant, oranges, cups, lotion and hand sanitizer are only a few of the free things given out at the health fair. Freshman Ashira Mason stated "They promoted healthy eating and protected sex." My favorite part was playing the game with freshman Keniesha and Mr. Brian. It was testing your knowledge on fruits and veggies with facts on each fruit/veggie.

Im not sexually active put the seniors had given me helpful information on how to inform my friends on protective sex and stds. Overall the health fair was very successful.

Take a stand

Most do not only want the Justice for the young 17 year old Trayvon Martin to only be the arrest of his shooter, George Zimmerman. They believe justice for him is also giving young black children, focusing more on young men, to not be labeled as troubled or a threat to the community. They want young black men to be able to travel openly without worries of others being afraid of them. Parents of young black men want to teach them starting at birth all the way to adulthood about situations such as different backgrounds, integrity, honesty, justice, respect and the true meaning of community. Parents also believe that what ever there child turns out to be they will play an important part as well.
They believe we should take a stand because this not only happening in Florida. It’s happening everywhere. They believe it is based in different systems created in this world based for African American children.  Some systems based of things like health, education, discipline, welfare and the Juvenile Justice systems.
Therefore, they believe that we stop this by doing things. Like reaching out to the community, helping schools, vote, and volunteer and most importantly teaching our children.
Well I do agree with the fact that there isn’t just one type of justice there for Trayvon. This situation made people realize how bad the labeling of a normal African American child was. It made me realize how important proving others wrong about how us African Americans may act or be.

Live jewelry or bling slavery?

http://travel.yahoo.com/ideas/live-jewelry-or-bling-slavery--.html

I recently read a very interesting article on yahoo.com. This article had me thinking, how far am i willing to go to set or be apart of a trend? Women in mexico have a very weird but fashionable trend going on as of now. Beetle jewelry is now very popular. Crazy right? It may not seem very appealing but trust me it is. Women decorate these bugs with chains and rhinestones. This unique fashion trend comes with alot of controversy. Animal activists say that this practice should be banned everywhere. These expensive broaches arent legal passed the mexican border.

Ewwwwwwwww, was my reaction to this article. How could someone wear a a bug as jewelry. Not only is it nasty, its wrong. You would not catch me wearing a beetle broach, even if they make it legal in the U.S. Freshman georgenna minor stated "It makes me feel as if i have bugs around my neck." While freshman Emaijah Johnson said "I would wear it as long as it isnt going to sting me.

Facebook is using you...

Facebook is now selling pieces of stock. The only thing that Facebook has to provide for the stocks are its users information. This well known website gets its money from different ads that appear from information on someone’s profile. Facebook makes $3.2 billion off of advertising and Google making 10 times that  from emailing and searching. Many things from the Internet has prevented people to get custody and also has a big impact on situations dealing with the law. There are also companies that are used only to look up information about what people do online. Using other people’s information from online can give off stereotypes.

This article is interesting. I knew that jobs sometimes look at what you write on social networks, but i never knew that those social networks make money off of you. I am slightly concerned about what i post on twitter. I realize that the stuff i post can be held against me. That is why i am cautious about what i post. I have slipped a couple of times, but i wouldn't mind if a future employer seen stuff i tweeted.
